First founded and settled by the Agawam Native American community, Chicopee was a beautiful location on the rivers and in the hills of the Pioneer Valley. Parts of the area were then purchased in 1636 by William Pynchon. The land was expansive and was later sectioned off and divided into different districts, later to become bordered by the geographical surrounding of the Connecticut River.
Chicopee’s first industry was a sawmill as its river location was ideal, but it continued to expand exponentially within 50 years of its establishment. Though the mill was its initial industrial site, the city quickly grew to also encompass two acres of land that laid the foundation for an iron foundry, catapulting the city into a flourishing economy. Because of these sparks, Chicopee became the home to textile mills, waterpower canals and other manufacturing industries along the river and inspired the city’s motto: “Industriae Variae” meaning “varied industries”.
